# NumPy: Set whether to print full or truncated ndarray

When outputting a NumPy array `ndarray` with `print()`, it may be truncated if the number of elements is large.

You can control whether to truncate or not by setting the parameter `threshold` with `numpy.set_printoptions()`.

• Set `threshold` with `np.set_printoptions()`
• Get `threshold` with `np.get_printoptions()`
• Always print the truncated `ndarray`
• Specify how many elements to print: `edgeitems`
• Always print the full `ndarray` without truncation

The settings by `np.set_printoptions()` also apply to Jupyter Notebook.

## Set threshold with np.set_printoptions()

If the number of elements in `ndarray` is greater than the value set in `threshold`, it will be truncated. The default value of `threshold` is `1000`.

np.set_printoptions(threshold=10)

np.set_printoptions(threshold=9)

In the case of a multi-dimensional array, the number of elements of the whole array is compared with `threshold`.

For example, in the case of a two-dimensional array, whether or not it is truncated is determined by the total number of elements regardless of the number of rows and columns.

## Get threshold with np.get_printoptions()

You can get the current value of `threshold` with `numpy.get_printoptions()`.

## Always print the truncated ndarray

If `threshold` is set to `0`, `ndarray` will always be truncated if possible.

``````np.set_printoptions(threshold=0)

print(np.arange(100))
# [ 0  1  2 ... 97 98 99]

print(np.arange(7))
# [0 1 2 ... 4 5 6]

print(np.arange(6))
# [0 1 2 3 4 5]
``````

## Specify how many elements to print: edgeitems

Set `edgeitems` to determine how many elements should be printed on the edge.

The default value of `edgeitems` is`3`, so if the size of each dimension of `ndarray` is less than or equal to`6`, it will not be truncated regardless of the value of `threshold` as in the example above.

np.set_printoptions(edgeitems=3)

## Always print the full ndarray without truncation

If `threshold` is set to infinity `np.inf`, full elements will always be printed without truncation.

However, it may be safer to use an appropriate value rather than `np.inf`, since it may accidentally display a huge `ndarray`.

The number of characters in a line is set by `linewidth`. The default value is `75`.
